Last week it was reported that the State Department and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were deeply involved in the scandal known as Operation Fast and Furious, orProject Gunwalker. Today, however, new evidence has surfaced indicating that not only was Hillary deeply involved in the scandal but was one of the masterminds behind it.

N.M. Rothschild is considered by City of London sources to be one of the most influential parts of the British intelligence establishment, tied to the Thatcher “free market” wing of the Tory Party. Because it is connected to the highest levels of the British intelligence establishment, Rothschilds managed to evade any prominent mention of its complicity in one of the more sordid black covert intelligence networks, that of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI). According to investigative citizen journalist Mike Vanderboegh, sources close to the development of the Gunwalker scheme state that early on, Hillary and her trusted associated at State, Andrew J. Shapiro, devised at least part of the framework of what would later become Operation Fast and Furious. It was Shapiro who first described the details of the proposed scheme early in 2009 just after the Obama Administration took office.

My sources say that as Hillary’s trusted subordinate, it was Shapiro who first described to the Secretary of State the details of what has become the Gunwalker Scandal.

The precise extent to which Hillary Clinton‘s knowledge of, and responsibility for, the Gunwalker Plot, lies within the memories of these two men, Shapiro and Steinberg, sources say.

The sources also express dismay that the Issa committee is apparently restricting itself to the Department of Justice and not venturing further afield. The House Foreign Affairs Committee, they say, needs to summon these two men and their subordinates — especially at the Mexico Desk at State — and question them under oath as to what Hillary Clinton knew about the origins of the Gunwalker Scandal and when she knew it.

There is one other thing those sources agree upon. The CIA, they say, knows “everything” about the “Mexican hat dance” that became the Gunwalker Scandal.

The ‘Steinberg’ mentioned in the quote above is Hillary Clinton’s former Deputy Secretary of State, who was appointed directly by Barack Obama and was considered from the start to be an ‘Obama man’ whose objective was to carry out the wishes of the President in the State Department.

Hillary had said of Steinberg,

Clinton said Steinberg had been a “fixture” at meetings with the National Security Council (NSC) and frequently represented the US State Department at the White House.

That statement is key. Hillary herself stayed out of all meetings dealing with strategy concerning the euphemism the Administration used to designate Gunwalker, ‘strategy meetings on Mexico and the problem of drug and gun trafficking.’ Hillary’s absence would give the impression that she had no connection to the scheme while making sure that her views were represented by Steinberg and Shapiro, both of whom were fully complicit with the details that developed concerning how to pad statistics on U.S. guns in Mexico.

According to sources, Hillary was obsessed with gun statistics that would prove that ’90% of the firearms used by Mexican criminals come from the United States.’ As previouly reported, that meme, repeated incessantly by Democratic Senators, Barack Obama, certan members of the ATF, Janet Napolitano, and Hillary Clinton was patently and blatantly false. The fact that they all knew it was false is borne out by the lengths to which each of the above named co-conspirators went to attempt to ‘prove’ that the 90% figure was true.

My sources say that this battle of the “statistics” was taken very seriously by all players — the White House, State and Justice. Yet, WHY was this game of statistics so important to the players? This statistics mania is similar to the focus on “body counts” in Vietnam. Yet if Vietnam body counts were supposed to be a measure of how we were winning that war, the focus on the 90 percent meme was certainly not designed to be a measure of how we were winning the war against arming the cartels, but rather by what overwhelming standard we were LOSING. Why?

Recall what the whistleblower ATF agents told us right after this scandal broke in the wake of the death of Brian Terry: “ATF source confirms ‘walking’ guns to Mexico to ‘pad’ statistics.”

Thus, from the beginning the scheme was to pad statistics on U.S. guns in Mexico in order to be in a strengthened position to call for gun bans and strict gun control at a time when it was politically unpopular. According to news reports, this sudden violent rampage was completely out of character for James Holmes, who was described as "shy."

The New York Times is now reporting:

Billy Kromka, a pre-med student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, worked with Mr. Holmes for three months last summer as a research assistant in a lab of at the Anschutz Medical Campus. Mr. Kromka said he was surprised to learn Mr. Holmes was the shooting suspect. "It was just shocking, because there was no way I thought he could have the capacity to do commit an atrocity like this," he said. "He spent much of his time immersed in the computer, often participating in role-playing online games..."

There is already conjecture that James Holmes may have been involved in mind-altering neuroscience research and ended up becoming involved at a depth he never anticipated. His actions clearly show a strange detachment from reality, indicating he was not in his right mind. That can only typically be accomplished through drugs, hypnosis or trauma (and sometimes all three).

His behavior doesn't add

His behavior already reveals stark inconsistencies that question the mainstream explanation of events. For example, he opened fire on innocent people but then calmly surrendered to police without resistance. This is not consistent with the idea of "killing everyone."

Furthermore, he then admitted to police that his apartment was booby-trapped with explosives. If you were really an evil-minded Joker trying to kill people (including cops), why would you warn them about the booby trap in advance? It doesn't add up.

"Holmes was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, police said, adding he didn't resist when he was arrested," reports a local CBS news affiliate (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/07/20/police-14-dead-in-colorado-the...).

"After his arrest, Holmes told police about 'possible explosives in his residence,' Oates said. When police searched his apartment, they discovered it was booby-trapped and evacuated surrounding buildings, police said. Oates said bomb technicians are determining how to disarm flammable or explosive material in the third-floor apartment. He said police could be there some time."

None of this checks out. If you're a killer bent on causing mayhem, why tell the police about your surprise bomb waiting for them back at your apartment?

Holmes was clearly provided with exotic gear (and bomb-making skills)

"He said pictures from inside the apartment are fairly disturbing and the devices look to be sophisticated, adding the booby-traps were 'something I've never seen.' One rifle, two handguns, a knife, a bullet proof vest, a ballistic helmet, a gas device, a gas mask, military SWAT clothing and unidentified explosives were also found in Holmes' car, a law enforcement source told CBS News. Oates said Holmes wore a gas mask, a ballistic helmet and vest as well as leg, groin and throat protectors during the shooting."

In other words, this guy was equipped with exotic gear by someone with connections to military equipment. SWAT clothing, explosives, complex booby-traps... c'mon, this isn't a "lone gunman." This is somebody who was selected for a mission, given equipment to carry it out, then somehow brainwashed into getting it done.

Shortly before noon crews were successful performing a controlled detonation... More controlled detonations were possible.

...there were multiple trip wires throughout the apartment. Investigators have also seen what appear to be mortars planted in the apartment -- sort of the kind of mortars that might be seen in a commercial fireworks show. Up to a half dozen of them are scattered around.

...they have seen a number of inflated balloons in the apartment... with many appearing to be filled with a powder. Also linked together are bottles of liquid. ...a strong smell of gasoline emanating from the apartment.

...several boxes on top of the refrigerator and there are lights flashing on the boxes.

...30 aerial shells (fireworks) commercially legally available for purchase. ...the suspect may have filled them with smokeless powder. ...entering the apartment would have caused a trip wire to trigger one liquid container to pour/mix with another. When the two mix together, they set off the main charge of the device which may be additional flammable liquids.

FBI has a track record of staging similar assaults, then stopping them at the last minute

This is not your run-of-the-mill crime of passion. It was a carefully planned, heavily funded and technically advanced attack. Who might be behind all this? Comment added for clarification: I'm on the record saying, in the video posted below, that the FBI is "80% good guys" and "20% bad guys," which is typical for almost any law enforcement organization. Most FBI men and women are working in the interests of upholding the law. It's only a relatively small number who engage in the kind of terrorism training mentioned by the New York Times, above.

Mystery man Holmes has no background

On top of all this, Holmes apparently has no background. "He's not on anybody's radar screen -- nothing," said a peace officer in a NYT article. "This guy is somewhat of an enigma. Nobody knows anything about him." (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/21/us/colorado-mall-shooting.html)

Mr. Holmes's only criminal history is a traffic summons, the authorities said. He earned a bachelor's degree with honors in neuroscience in 2010 from the University of California, Riverside, and was a graduate student in neurosciences at the University of Colorado at Denver's Anschutz Medical Campus... He was currently collecting unemployment...

Question: How does an unemployed medical student afford $20,000 in weapons gear?

If you start to look at the really big picture here, the obvious question arises: How does an unemployed medical student afford all the complex weapons gear, bomb-making gear, "flammable" booby trap devices, ammunition, multiple magazines, bullet-proof vest, groin protection, ballistic helmet, SWAT uniform and all the rest of it?

A decent AR-15 rifle costs $1,000 or more all by itself. The shotgun and handgun might run another $800 total. Spare mags, sights, slings, and so on will run you at least another $1,000 across three firearms. The bullet-proof vest is easily another $800, and the cost of the bomb-making gear is anybody's guess. With all the specialty body gear, ammunition, booby-trap devices and more, I'm guessing this is at least $20,000 in weapons and tactical gear, much of which is very difficult for civilians to get in the first place. Comment added: Don't forget the cost of all the training (thousands of dollars) and the bomb-making equipment. Holmes reportedly had 30 improvised grenades, mortars, binary liquids that explode when mixed, wires, exotic bomb equipment... this gets expensive very quickly (even if you can source this equipment!)

The mere manufacture of an explosive booby-trap device is, all by itself, a felony crime by the way. And remember: "Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes' apartment is booby-trapped with a 'sophisticated' maze of flammable devices. Question: Where does an unemployed, introverted medical school student get the training to deploy sophisticated booby traps, tactical body armor, weapons systems and more? Certainly not in graduate school!

All this leads to an obvious third party influence over all this. Someone else taught this guy these skills and funded the acquisition of the equipment.

Update: An article posted on Sunday by the Daily Mail reveals Holmes had a "'mind-boggling' stash of ammunition" and "three types of explosives were found - jars filled with accelerates, chemicals that would explode when mixed together and more than 30 improvised grenades." The Wall Street Journal is also now reporting: "the suspect bought four guns over the past 60 days, and over the Internet bought 3,000 rounds for an assault rifle, 3,000 rounds for Glock handguns and about 300 shotgun rounds. The suspect also had a 100-round drum-style magazine for the assault rifle that would have allowed him to fire 50 to 60 rounds a minute." Note: Some readers have questioned the $20,000 figure estimated here, saying this gear could have been acquired for only $10,000 or so. I doubt that, as all the extras that you need to effectively run these guns cost a lot of money: training courses, spare magazines, etc. Just a decent AR-15 battle sight (a holographic red dot sight) can run $1,000 - $2,000. Search "ACOG" if you don't believe me. It is also reported that Holmes bought 6,000 rounds of ammo, which definitely isn't cheap either, especially given that we now know half of those rounds were rifle rounds. It's clear this guy was spending big bucks. Whether it's $10k or $20k isn't really that much of a point.

Staged just in time for a vote on the UN small arms treaty?

More and more, this shooting is looking like a deliberate plot staged by the government itself much like Operation Fast and Furious pulled off by the ATF (http://www.naturalnews.com/032934_ATF_illegal_firearms.html) which helped smuggle tens of thousands of guns into Mexico for the purpose of causing "gun violence" in the USA, then blaming the Second Amendment for it.

All this looks like James Holmes completed a "mission" and then calmly ended that mission by surrendering to police and admitting everything. The mission, as we are now learning, was to cause as much terror and mayhem as possible, then to have that multiplied by the national media at exactly the right time leading up the UN vote next week on a global small arms treaty that could result in gun confiscation across America. Even Forbes.com wrote about this quite extensively, warning readers about the coming gun confiscation effort related to the UN treaty. The story was authored by Larry Bell (http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrybell/2011/06/07/u-n-agreement-should...) and says the UN treaty could "override our national sovereignty, and in the process, provide license for the federal government to assert preemptive powers over state regulatory powers guaranteed by the Tenth Amendment in addition to our Second Amendment rights."

In other words, this has all the signs of Fast & Furious, Episode II. I wouldn't be surprised to discover someone in Washington was behind it all. After all, there's no quicker way to disarm a nation and take total control over the population than to stage violence, blame it on firearms, then call for leaders to "do something!" Such calls inevitably end up resulting in gun confiscation, and it's never too long after that before government genocide really kicks in like we saw with Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao and other tyrants.

A "monopoly of force" in government is far more dangerous than a crazed lone shooter

So yes, James Holmes and other crazed shooters kill a number of people each year in random acts of violence. It's horrifying and wrong, but it's nothing compared to the millions of lives that governments tend to destroy when they gain total power over the populace.

The most dangerous thing in the world, it turns out, is not a crazy person with a rifle; it's a government with a "monopoly of force" over the entire population. DHS WON'T EXPLAIN ITS ORDER OF 450 MILLION HOLLOW POINT BULLETS

After 9/11, the United States government created the Department of Homeland Security to prevent future acts of terrorism and deal with other domestic issues. Now in order to keep doing such, the agency is asking for 450 million hollow point bullets.

The DHS has signed off on an “indefinite delivery” from defense contractors ATK that will include, for some reason, nearly 500 million high-power ammunition for .40 caliber firearms. The department has yet to discuss why they are ordering such a massive bevy of bullets for an agency that has limited need domestically for doing harm, but they say they expect to continue receiving shipments from the manufacturer for the next five years, during which they plan to blow through enough ammunition to execute more people than there are in the entire United States.

“We are proud to extend our track record as the prime supplier of .40 caliber duty ammunition for DHS,” reads an official statement from Ron Johnson, ATK’s president of Security and Sporting, who adds that his group will also be giving up weaponry to the DHS subdivision of ICE, or Immigrations and Custom Enforcement.

While ammunition itself seems not too unreasonable of a request by a major federal entity that emphasizes domestic durability and safeguarding the country from coast to coast, the choice — and quantity — of its hollow point order raises a lot of questions about future plans for the DHS.

ATK says they won their contract with the US government by being able to provide them with 450 million HST bullets, which it describes as “the next generation in high performance duty ammunition.”

What does that mean, exactly? On their website, the contractor claims that the ammunition is specifically designed so that it can pass through a variety of obstructions and offers “optimum penetration for terminal performance.” Or, in other words, this is the kind of bullet designed to stop any object dead in its tracks and, if emptied into the hands of the DHS a few hundred million times, just might do as much.

Since its inception, the Department of Homeland Security has not only absorbed ICE and other government entities, but has arguably extended its powers much more broadly than many had imagined.

Under the recently authorized Trespass Bill, H.R. 347, protesters that allegedly disrupt occurrences acknowledged by the DHS of being a National Special Security Event will be charged with a federal crime. As the DHS gains more and more ground in fighting terrorism domestically, the US at the same time has turned the tables to make its definition of terrorist way less narrow.

With any American blogger or free thinking on the fringe of what the government can go after under H.R. 347, or the National Defense Authorization Act that allows for the indefinite detention of US citizens without charge, the DHS could just be blasting through what’s left of its budget to make sure that its roster of agents across the country can get in their target practice over the next few years.

Of course, the government might just want to ensure that each one of those agents is more than able to assassinate Americans not just around the globe, but on their own soil. After all, for all of those angsty alleged Americans engaged in terrorism abroad, the US has the largest military in the history of the world to deal with them. In that case, they could argue that it only makes sense to equip their armed forces at home as well.

HOMELAND SECURITY IS SUPPORTING A GAY PRIDE CELEBRATION &; JANET NAPOLITANO IS GETTING AN AWARD

On June 7, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is holding a gay-themed event called the June Pride Ceremony. The hour-long gathering, scheduled to take place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., will feature DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano as a guest speaker, among others. The purpose of the event is to commemorate June Pride Month, while also marking “a year of significant progress for DHS Pride and for the LGBT community.”

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) web site, DHS Pride, the group behind the event, is an employee association that represents gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgendered individuals working within DHS’s ranks. The organization seeks to showcase how these individuals work diligently to secure the U.S. Here are some of the goals the group works towards, as per its web site:

•Identify and address issues particularly affecting Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender employees of the Department.

•Support and guide the Department in the development and implementation of effective policies and practices for the elimination of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in all Departmental activities.

•Serve as a resource and point of contact for its members, for those seeking or considering employment with the Department, and for other interested individuals or groups regarding LGBT issues and activities at DHS.

Aside from Napolitano, who will receive the DHS Pride Award for Service, Amanda Simpson, special assistant to the Army Acquisition Executive, DOD, will deliver the keynote address. Simpson is the first openly transgendered woman to be appointed to the U.S. government. Following the speeches, there will be a reception.

According to the DHS Pride web site, Napolitano’s award is being given for “her many years of dedicated public service, her unwavering support of DHS personnel, her intense support of a DHS based on unity and inclusion and her support of DHS policies and protections for LGBT personnel.”

This event comes as the Obama administration continues to expand its policies and support for the gay and lesbian community. Last month, the president publicly endorsed same-sex marriage.

We may have spoken before. This letter will, in part, serve as my official record of my having contacted you regarding the above referenced subject matter.

The President of the United States of America is not eligible to serve as our President.

In the month of February 2009lwas on the continent of Africa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This was not my first trip to the dark continent. The first time that I set foot on African soil was in the year 2007. In February of 2009 I traveled to the Congo to document the story of a cryptic (as in cryptozoology) animal that lives there in the Congo. This fabled creature is a dinosaur-like animal that is commonly referred to as Mokele Mbembe.

It should be noted that other such hidden or once fabled, animals have been discovered in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The animal now known to most of the world as the Okapi was once considered to be a mythical creature by European3 who referred to it as the African Unicorn.

In the same month of February 2009 l traveled throughout both of the Congos, Uganda and Kenya. I'd gone to Nairobi, Kenya specifically to interview a man that claims to have seen the animal (Mokele Mbembe) years ago when he was a soldier in the Congo.

Upon my arrival in Nairobi I was bombarded with questions in English on my feelings and opinions of a Kenyan governing the United States of America.

The first several times I responded in saying that not enough time had elapsed since Barack Obama's appointment as President of the USA. I went on to say that I'd have to hold my official opinion until at least January 2010. A year in Office might be sufficient for me to judge his ability to govern the USA.

Natuarally I thought that by "Kenyan" they were referring to Barack Obama’s blood, being that his father Barack Obama Sr was a native of Kenya. After a day and a half of my being in Nairobi I learned that they were literally referring to President Barack Obama Jr. as being born in Keny4 a native of Kenya.

Now I started asking questions; did his father's Kenyan blood somehow entitle Barack Jr to be the equivalent of a native Kenyan? No, not all, I was to find out. They were referring to Barack Obama Jr's physical birth on Kenyan soil.

Kenyans were amused at how gullible Americans could be when it came to obvious things like the fact that Kenyans overtly admit to Barack Jls Kenyan birth, yet the Americans continue to believe that they know better.

I delved further and found that a birth certificate was on file at Coast Province General Hospital in Mombasa.

I traveled to Mombasa" Kenya with the specific intention of procuring some sort of birth record from the hospital (CPGID) that so many Kenyans had referred to as being the hospital where US President Barack Hussein Obama had been born.

Upon a perimeter inspection of the hospital (and with the help of a friend from the Congo) I ascertained that me even being allowed to enter the hospital was going to prove to be a task, and a tremendous one at that.

At that point I began to form an intricate plan which would not only grant me access to the hospital but also an opportunity to procure a certified copy of the hospital birth record of US President Barack Obama, if a birth record at the Kenyan hospital did indeed exist.

My ground plan entailed two hospitals in Mombasa" Kenya: Coast Province General Hospital and also a second hospital named Mombasa Hospital. My plan expanded to include a Kenyan military / police officer. The plan developed further and included a second Kenyan military / police officer.

I paid a total of three monetary bribes in the amounts of (in chronological order) $200 USD, $500 USD and $5,000 USD.

The whole undertaking also included the assistance of a friend from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

My plan proved to be very effective and successful. On the 19e day of February 2009 I, Lucas Smith walked out of the Coast Province General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya with a certified copy of President Barack Hussein Obama II's original hospital birth certificate / record.

The birth certificate includes two signatures from 1961. One of the signatures is from the hand of the attending doctor, James O.W. Ang'aw4, the other is that of the Supervisor of Obstetrics, John Kwame Odongo.

The British Protectorate of Kenya birth certificate also includes a2009 stamp and signature from the Chief Administrator of Coast Province General Hospital, Helton Maganga. The certificate also includes a 2009 embossed seal from the Coast Province General Hospital, Mombas4 Kenya.

President Barack Hussein Obama II was born in Mombasa, British Protectorate of Keny4 in 1961. He was born to a father who himself was born in the Colony of Kenya.

It should also be noted that the father born in 1939) never acquired US citizenship when he was in the United States of America via a student visa.

Honorable Congresswoman Pelosi, I respectfully request that you fulfill your lawful obligation to honor The Constitution of the United States of America and remove from Office the de facto President Barack Obama.

Without your help, Honorable Congresswoman, what options are left for 'We The People'? The Honorable Courts of our country make claims they lack jurisdiction and have also used the issue of 'standing' to avoid permitting the necessary investigation to take place.

Attached to this notarized letter addressed to you, f have included e copy of the 1961 Coast Province General Hospital birth certificate of US President (de facto) Barack l{ussein Obama II.I have in my possession a certified copy of Mr. Obama's original birth record. As explained above l personally obtained this document in February 2009 from his birth hospital in Mombasan Kenya.

Honorable Congresswoman, before I close this letter I'd like to bring to your attention Senate Publication 103-21. This "103-21'o is an edition of the Constitution of the United States of America that was published at some point during the 1990s, perhaps during the 103 Congress. I received an official copy of this "103-21- in the year 2001 as it was sent to me via US Postal Service mail from the United States Senate.

Senate Publication 103-21 contains not only a true and correct copy of the US Constitution but also brief explanations of each of the Constitution's sections which were prepared by the Office of the Secretary of the Senate with the assistance of Johnny H. Killian of the Library of Congress.

On page number 18 of Senate Pub.103-21, adjacent to Article II, Section 2, Clause 5 of the US Const., you will find the following explanation:

“This clause requires that in order to take oath of office a president must be 35, a resident within the United States for 14 years, and a natural-born citizen. This last requirement (natural-born citizen) raises the question of whether someone born to American parents outside of the United States would be eligible to hold the office."

As I have stated in the forgoing this above cited publication was prepared by the Office of the Secretary of the Senate with the assistance of Johnny H. Killian of the Library of Congress. As you may know, Mr. Johnny H. Killian advised Congress for more than 44 years on constitutional matters. As senior specialist in American public law at the Congressional Research Service, Mr. Killian was the person most often called upon when the constitutionality of a proposal was in question.

Mr. Killian was also the editor of and major contributor to the 1972, 1982, 1992 and 2002
editions of "Constitution of the United States of America: Analysis and Interpretation,"
nicknamed the Annotated, a seminal work on the judicial history of all constitutional
amendments that is a standard text in U.S. law schools.

Senate Publication l03-21, prepared with the assistance of Johnny H. Killian, clearly states that the *natural-born citizen" clause of Article II, Section 2, Clause 5 of the US Constitution 'raises the question of whether someone born to American parents outside of the United States would be eligible to hold the office'.

Honorable Congresswoman Pelosi, again I respectfully request and implore you to fulfill your lawful obligation to honor, follow, comply with and abide by The Constitution of the United States of America. You took an oath, and you took that oath freely, to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Our de facto president Barack Obama was not born within the United States of America and is not eligible to hold office of President. It is your constitutional duty to openly and overtly investigate this matter.

I respectfully pray for the relief that Congress can provide by removing from Office the illegal de facto president Barack Obama.

JOHN ROBERTS SAVES "OBAMACARE", ENRAGES TEA PARTY CONSERRVATIVES

Word had barely come down that the Supreme Court majority was upholding the Affordable Care Act when incensed conservatives began printing up “Impeach John Roberts” T-shirts and a hacker had altered the chief justice’s title on his Wikipedia page to “Chief Traitor of the United States.”

On a freshly minted “Impeach John Roberts” Facebook page, one tea party “patriot” wrote, “Welcome to fascism. Thanks to this horrible decision from the 4 liberal justices and John Roberts there is zero limit to what the government can force us to do.”

Outside of the perpetually alarmed right wing loony bin, however, Roberts was receiving praise for acting as the fair umpire he promised to be when he was confirmed by the Senate. Of all the major players with much to win or lose in the challenge to the Democrats’ monumental healthcare law, Roberts may have gained the most.

Obviously, he will not be impeached, no matter how loud the howling from the hard right. Instead, he has improved his reputation and begun building a balanced legacy as chief justice.

Until this week, his critics on the left dismissed Roberts as just one more predictable, partisan vote in the Republican faction of the high court. But, having joined in striking down much of Arizona’s immigration law on Monday and siding with the court’s four liberals on the healthcare law on Thursday, that caricature has been erased.

By taking charge of the healthcare ruling, Roberts asserted his leadership of the court while fashioning the decision to match his own philosophy. He avoided the peril of overturning a landmark piece of legislation by switching the key premise on which it was being defended. The core element of the law is the requirement that all Americans must obtain healthcare insurance. Those who can afford it but refuse to buy it will be penalized with a fine. Supporters said this mandate was permitted by the commerce clause of the Constitution. Detractors said the mandate was an unconstitutional expansion of government power that, if allowed, would mean, as the tea party scribe wrote, “there is zero limit to what the government can force us to do.”

Roberts agreed with his fellow conservatives that the mandate should not be justified as part of the congressional responsibility to regulate interstate commerce, but he reasoned that the fine for failing to buy health insurance falls well within the power of Congress to levy taxes and, therefore, the mandate was legal and constitutional. Court liberals probably did not like the implicit limitation Roberts was placing on the commerce clause, but a win is a win and they fell in line behind his opinion.

President Obama was thrilled to see his administration’s premier legislative achievement upheld, especially after so many predictions that it would never survive the scrutiny of a conservative court (and after CNN and Fox News prematurely and erroneously reported the court had struck down the law). Obama will now have a second chance to sell his healthcare scheme to a skeptical electorate, and the stamp of approval from the Supreme Court should make that an easier task.

Mitt Romney may not be entirely upset by the outcome, either, because he can now run as the only man who can kill "Obamacare" (as long as voters do not begrudge him the fact that he is the godfather of the healthcare mandate, having instituted the same mechanism in Massachusetts when he was governor). But, in the long run, no matter who wins the presidential election, Republicans will have a much harder time getting rid of the central elements of the healthcare act – access to coverage for people with preexisting conditions, limits to what insurance companies can charge, inclusion of young adults on their parents’ policies, guaranteed coverage for preventative care, no limits on payouts for people with long-term illnesses. The Supreme Court could have made it easy on Republicans by doing the job for them. Now, they will risk the wrath of voters if and when they try.

Ironic as it may be, history may one day call Roberts the savior of Obamacare.
